Romania Pavilion Expo 2025 Osaka

Welcome to the Romania Pavilion!

You are about to step into a world of innovation, traditions and discoveries, part of a unique global event – Expo 2025 Osaka, which will take place from April 13th to October 13th, 2025, on the artificial island of Yumeshima in Osaka Bay, Japan.
With the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives”, this world exhibition will bring together more than 150 countries to explore innovative solutions for the future.
Expo 2025 Osaka is organized under the concept of a living laboratory – “People’s Living Lab”, where visitors can experience new ideas and emerging technologies aimed at improving peoples lives.
The exhibition is structured in three major sub-themes, forming the three physical sections of the exhibition:

“Saving Lives”
– dedicated to innovations in health, environmental protection and management of essential resources for life.
“Empowering Lives” – focusing on education, technology and social inclusion.
“Connecting Lives” – which explores how human interactions and relationships between communities can shape the future.

Romania at the Expo 2025 Osaka

The Romanian Pavilion is part of the “Saving Lives” section, contributing with innovative and sustainable solutions for protecting and saving lives. Romania asserts its role in this area by capitalizing on its natural resources, through meaningful scientific discoveries and initiatives aimed at health and environmental protection.
Romania’s natural resources play a crucial role in the „Saving Lives” sub-theme scope, as it is a valuable resources for health and well-being. Romania has 60% of Europe’s mineral water springs, virgin forests that contribute to the climate balance and some of the most fertile soils in the world. These resources are fundamental for people’s health, but also for maintaining a sustainable environment.

Romania also stands out for its innovations in the field of science and technology. Research centers in the country develop advanced solutions in biomedicine, nanotechnology and applied physics, having a real impact on improving public health and longevity.

The Romania Pavilion brings these elements to the fore through an exciting, interactive and multisensory experience, where visitors will discover the connection between nature, technology and life.

Exhibitional concept – “Romanian Magic Box”

The Romania pavilion comes to life in an interactive design, known as the “Romanian Magic Box”, a structure that will engage you by activating all five senses. The exterior, made of wood and decorated with monumental columns, invites visitors into an atmosphere of mystery and fascination. The light and shadows create a spectacular visual game, suggesting a journey of discovery. Indoors, a series of dynamic projections, unique sounds, smells and textures will guide visitors in a multisensory experience that reveals the essence of Romania – its past, present and vision for the future.

Visitors will go through a guided circuit through 9 thematic areas (Reception Area, Mirroring in Nature Area, Tradition and Technology Area, Food and Crafts Area, Steps of Miracles Area, Area dedicated to Art and Crafts, Cultural Manifestation Area, Nature and Life Area, Culinary Expo Area), each of them offering a unique and interactive experience, in which they will discover tradition,  technology and innovation potential of Romania.

The architectural concept was selected following a competition organized by the “Ion Mincu” University of Architecture and Urban Planning of Bucharest, in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in which students from the Faculty of Architecture participated, with the project of students Muraru Georgiana Anemona and Bodoalcă Ioana Anca being the winner.

Curatorial concept – “Romania, Land of Tomorrow”

Under the concept “Romania, “Land of Tomorrow”, the pavilion explores how Romania contributes to a sustainable global society through innovation, traditions and valuable natural resources. Each experience in the pavilion highlights the symphony between people and the environment, inviting visitors to reflect on sustainable solutions that can save lives and improve their quality.

Romania is a country of the future, it is the land of tomorrow, because of its natural and cultural heritage, but especially because of the way it combines tradition with the future. It is a place where the past is not forgotten, but transformed into inspiration for progress.

Tradition – Romania preserves and promotes authentic heritage elements, such as its crafts, architecture and gastronomy, but reinterprets them in an innovative way.
Nature – Its natural resources are embedded into sustainable development, providing solutions for health and environmental protection.
Technology – Romania is an emerging center of innovation, with important contributions in areas such as medical research, artificial intelligence and green energy.

In the “Land of Tomorrow”, technology does not replace humanity, but enriches it. It is a future in which progress is not only technological innovation, but also a better understanding of human needs, of the relationship between man and nature, between past and future.

The Romania Pavilion answers the focal question of Expo 2025 Osaka – “What is the happy way of life?” – with a simple but profound message:
“To live life in harmony and connection.”

With the guided tour within the pavilion, visitors will experience this vision in an interactive way, passing through artistic installations, projections, shows and culinary experiences that reflect Romania’s authenticity and diversity.

Visitors to the Romania Pavilion have the opportunity to:
Discover multimedia installations and interactive shows, which combine spectacular visual and sound elements.
Participate in traditional craft demonstrations and creative sessions, alongside Romanian artists and designers.
Taste traditional Romanian dishes, exploring the diversity of our gastronomy at the pavilion’s restaurant.

Through its Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Romania reaffirms its commitment to a future where life is protected, nature is respected, and innovation contributes to global well-being.

In the heart of the Romania Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, visitors are greeted by “Haru”, the charismatic pelican who becomes the ambassador of the “Land of Tomorrow”. The choice as its official mascot is not accidental – the name “Haru” means “spring” in Japanese, symbolizing new beginnings, rebirth and balance between man and nature.

The pelican is a powerful symbol for Romania, being one of the most impressive species that finds shelter in the Danube Delta, one of the richest and best preserved natural areas in Europe. This unique habitat, internationally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity, perfectly reflects Romania’s commitment to protecting frail life and ecosystems. Haru is thus an expression of the harmony between man and nature, of our ability to protect and coexist sustainably with the environment.

“Haru” is not only a symbol of the pavilion, but also an interactive presence. The pelican will welcome its guests with a spectacular hologram, appearing at different times of the exhibition tour to deliver greetings and inspirational messages to visitors in English and Japanese. This animated hologram will add an element of surprise and interaction, connecting the audience with the friendly and innovative spirit of the Romanian Pavilion.

More than just a character, “Haru” is a messenger of the pavilion’s theme – “Saving Lives”. Its appearance will remind visitors of the importance of protecting natural ecosystems and the deep connection between tradition and the future. The pelican, known for its ability to travel long distances in its migrations, thus also becomes a symbol of Romania that carries its values across borders, inspiring and connecting people from all over the world.

Whether they meet it at the entrance, during the exhibition or in the digital interaction area, visitors will discover in “Haru” a cheerful and curious guide, who invites them to explore “Land of Tomorrow” with an open mind and an inspiring heart.
